The first − and to this day only − Hungarian speed skater ever to have won the World Championships. He became an athlete of the Budapest Skating Club in 1941. In 1949 he held the world record in both 5000 and 10 000 meters. In the very same year he won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Davos and then became world champion in Oslo. He retired from competitive skating in 1960 and currently lives in Sweden.
