ESSENT ISU EUROPEAN SPEED SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012

1-minute interviews | 08/01/2012
After the 5000m Ladies' Race

DIANE VALKENBURG (NED) − ECh ALLROUND 4. 2011
− Last year I finished 4th and I wanted to achieve the same again, so I’m not really satisfied.
− The best two Dutch skaters at the Europeans get automatic qualification to the world champs, at the moment I’m 3rd, so I shall have to qualify later, I’m sad about that.

MARTINA SABLIKOVÁ (CZE) − 2010 & DEFENDING CHAMPION 2008-2009 bronze, 3000m, 5000m 1.place, 1500 2.place, 500 5.place (40.31)
− Today the ice was not good and the last 5 laps were tough, I was tired and I just wanted to get over it – I’m happy I could make it like I did.
− I trained a lot in open air rink, also I did it in December, which is a bit of help, getting used to open air conditions, but not too much.

CLAUDIA PECHSTEIN (GER) 1998, 2006, 2009 WINNER
− I feel very happy now with the silver, today the competition was really hard, the conditions were not really good because of the wind especially in our round and also the ice was too soft.
− I want to continue skating and to be there in Sochi, then we will see the rest.

IREEN WÜST (NED) 2008 GOLD 2010 2011 SILVER 1500m 1., 3000m 5000m 2., 500m 6. (40.49)
− I tried everything very hard, but the weather and the circumstances might have been too hard for me to cope with. I’m more of a technical skater – an open air rink and this wind are not ideal for me, I can’t deal with them.
− Yesterday on 1500m for example I thought I was running a great time, I gave 2 seconds to Claudia Pechstein, but when I crossed the finish line I saw that it was not good at all.
− Now I respect Martina Sabliková even more, having seen that she can run that great time under such weather conditions as well.

LINDA DE VRIES (NED)
− I feel great about finishing 4th, I didn’t expect anything before the competition.
− I’m really happy to have qualified for the world champs, we will see what I will be able to achieve there.
